Tchaikovsky Ouverture solennelle "1812" Chorus Romeo and Juliet Dances "Eugene Onegin" "The Oprichnik"

Tchaikovsky Ouverture solennelle "1812" Romeo and Juliet Eugene Onegin The Oprichnik
Boston Symphony Orchestra Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden Sir Colin Davis

APE+CUE | Booklet | 240 MB | 1984

Boston Symphony Orchestra Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden Tanglewood Festival Chorus Sir Colin Davis
Davis's device of having a chorus singing the chant-like music at the opening of 1812 works even more impressively on CD, where the hushed sound of male voices creeps in even more realistically thanks to the absence of background. Only the ultra-purist will worry about such treatment for 1812chorus taking the string lines, an organ the woodwind until the orchestra enters at the first fortissimo, chorus singing the Tsar's Hymn at the endfor it is highly effective, and generally as one would expect Davis's approach to Tchaikovsky is clean and direct, dramatic but never wilful. The later choral entry is not so clear as I expected on CD, but the inner textures are necessarily muddied by the jangle of bells. On CD the big thuds when the cannon is fired are most impressive, and one can easily detect the organ in the texture in the final bars, another unscheduled addition, except that Tchaikovsky's authorization in the score of a band ad lib. might be taken to justify anything.

The contrasts of Romeo and Juliet are similarly impressive on CD, with the gentle woodwind at the start immediately conveying presence and the timpani at the end exceptionally clear. The two overtures alone make short measure for a whole disc, and it was a good idea to add the brief colourful dances from Davis's 1979 LP of Tchaikovsky ballet music, an excellent issue that disappeared far too quickly. The analogue sound has been effectively freshened in the digital re-mastering to make it remarkably consistent with the Boston sound.'Reviewed: Gramophone 11/1984, Edward Greenfield

Liszt Complete Music for Solo Piano, Howard
7% recovery | EAC / APE | 20GB | Covers | 95 CD box

Label: Hyperion | Genre: Classical
The complete music for solo piano of Liszt. All Liszt's versions of his piano music were included, including more than 300 world premieres, and many other pieces unheard since Liszt's lifetime, and also all arrangements of other composers work. Four discs were given to Liszt's seventeen works for piano and orchestra, about half of which were première recordings made from unpublished manuscripts. The series ran to 94 full-length CDs, and has earned Howard a place in the Guinness Book Of Records.
Leslie Howard AM (born 29 April 1948) is an Australian pianist and composer. He is best known for being the first and only pianist to record the total piano output of Franz Liszt, including the world premiere recordings of over 300 of Liszt's works. However, his activities go far beyond this project. He has been described by The Guardian as "a master of a tradition of pianism in serious danger of dying out".

Our series of historic radio recordings from Russian archives has proved very popular all over the world. Many people have chosen performance over recording quality. which, when necessary, we have improved optimally. - Thus allowing themselves the infinite joy of listening to legendary performers.

The musicians in this large set are all (living) legends indeed: pianists, Sviatoslav Richter, Emil Gilels, Lazar Berman, Evgeny Kissin; violinists David Oistrakh, Leonid Kogan, Viktor Tretiakov and Gidon Kremer; cellists Rostropovich and Daniel Shafran. Solo works, chamber music and works with orchestra are included.

The recordings of lesser-known and hardly ever heard repertoire are a definite additional bonus of this series. The list of mainly Russian composers comprises such names as Catoire, Medtner, Kazhlaev, and Vladigerov.

This 100 CD set is combination of previously issued sets, with the exception of the recordings of Gidon Kremer. Simultaneously with this 100 CD box we separately issue a set of 10 CDs by this violinist.

You know that cliche, he was never the same man again after (fill in). Well, sometimes its true.
For me, it was this record that crossed my path when I was 20.
More specifically - Ebony Concerto!!!.
This tiny little concert for wind instruments blew my mind completely. It established my love for classical once and for all. I didnt touch a pop/rock record for ten years to come, and started to collect classical music at great speed.
What to say about it. About this genius performance of the Nederlands Blazersensemble and Edo de Waart.
I don't know. Words fail me. Listen for yourselves.
The record didn't need a lot of filtering after conversion. This 30-year-old record is in a surprisingly good state. I consider it one of my greatest treasures in my collection. I'm very, very fond of it. So much so that, most sentimentally, I hesitated to post it at first.
