Anne Sofie von Otter sings Offenbach: Arias & Scenes (2002)

Les musiciens du Louvre, cond. Marc Minkowski
EAC Rip | FLAC+CUE+LOG | 286 MB | no scans MP3 CBR 320kbps | 160 MB
Classical/Opera | Deutsche Grammofon | 70:02

The disc contains scenes from some Offenbach operettas such as La belle Hélène, La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein, and La Périchole as well as some of his lesser known works. While most of the music showcases Ms. Von Otter's talent, she is also accompanied by other soloists and a chorus, all of whom perform exceptionally well. Listeners are not only exposed to lesser known works of this composer, but also to the composer's many talents. When we listen to this music, it is not too much of a stretch to see how he could create the masterpiece of TALES OF HOFFMAN (yes, the barcarolle is included).

Roberto Alagna Sings Luis Mariano - C'Est Magnifique! (The Greatest Hists Of Operetta)

Exact Audio Copy v0.99 prebeta 5 | Release year 2005 | Log+Flac 252mb | Covers
Genre: French music

Mariano Eusebio González y García (August 13, 1914 - July 14, 1970) aka Luis Mariano was a popular tenor of Spanish Basque origin who achieved celebrity in 1946 with « La belle de Cadix » (« The Beautiful Lady of Cadix ») an operetta by Francis Lopez. He appeared in the 1954 film Adventures of the Barber of Seville and Le Chanteur de Mexico (1957) and became popular in France as well as his native Spain.

Luis Mariano was born in Irun, Spain on August 13, 1914, the son of a garagiste and taxi-driver and showed interest in singing as a child. His family moved to France at the start of the Spanish Civil War and settled in Bordeaux where he studied at the Conservatoire, and also sang in cabarets.

Jeanne Lagiscarde, who was in charge of the classical department of a record store in Bordeaux, took Mariano under her wing, and gave up her job to nurture his talent in Paris.[1] To earn a living, he sang in stage shows and appeared films, starting with 'L'escalier sans fin' in 1943. That year he auditioned for the role of Ernesto in Don Pasquale, and sang in the opera at the Palais de Chaillot and later at the Théâtre des Variétés, with Vina Bovy, recording excerpts from the opera. He also left many recordings of popular song and operetta.

He continued to appear in other films from 1946, including a singing role in Napoléon and a film adaptation of Lehar's Der Zarewitsch.

In his encyclopedia Gänzl describes Mariano as a "svelte singing idol of French operetta of the post-war stage and screen". Mariano died in Paris in 1970.

His music is featured prominently in the 1996 Belgian film Le huitième jour in which he is played by Laszlo Harmati during hallucination scenes.

Enjoy more than 4 hours of quality music by Franz Lehar, Oscar Straus, Emmerich Kalman and other great composers.

Operetta (It., diminutive of 'opera'; Fr. opérette; Ger. Operette; Sp. opereta). A light opera with spoken dialogue, songs and dances. The form flourished in Europe and the USA during the second half of the 19th century and the early part of the 20th. In the 17th and 18th centuries the term 'operetta' was applied in a more general way to a variety of stage works which were shorter or otherwise less ambitious than opera, such as vaudeville, Singspiel and ballad opera. It is still in use on the Continent for new works akin to the Musical Comedy, into which the operetta evolved in English-speaking countries. The policy of the Théâtre de l'Opéra-Comique to favour works of more serious pretensions left a gap between opéra comique and vaudeville, a gap that the operetta filled. The success and popular acclaim accorded Offenbach's opéras bouffes, an individual new form of entertainment, led the operetta to become established as a separate genre, and the resultant attempts to emulate Offenbach's success abroad brought into being other national schools of operetta and established the genre internationally.

Operetta grew out of the French opéra comique around the middle of the 19th century, to satisfy a need for short, light works in contrast to the full-length entertainment of the increasingly serious opéra comique. By this time the "comique" part of the genre name had become misleading: Carmen (1875) is an example of an opéra comique with a tragic plot. Opéra comique had dominated the French operatic stage since the decline of tragédie lyrique. Most researchers acknowledge that the credit for creating the operetta form should go to Hervé (1825–1892), a singer, composer, librettist, conductor, and scene painter. In 1842 he wrote the little opérette, L'Ours et le pacha, based on the popular vaudeville show by Scribe and Saintine. In 1848, Hervé made his first notable appearance on the Parisian stage, with Don Quichotte et Sancho Pança, which can be considered the starting point for the new French musical theatre tradition. Hervé's most famous works are the Gounod-parody Le Petit Faust (1869) and Mam'zelle Nitouche (1883).
